Steeplechase Park operated in Coney Island from 1897 to 1964. Created by the entrepreneur George C. Tilyou, it was the first of the three large amusement parks built in Coney Island, the other two being Luna Park (1903) and Dreamland (1904). Of the three, Steeplechase was the longest-lasting, running for 67 years. This was its most popular attraction: a gravity-powered ride in which people raced each other while riding wooden horses that glided along metal tracks over a long and curving course.
